Scams - Cold Calling Fraud HM Revenue & Customs

HMRC PRIZE WINNINGS SCAM

Royal Greenwich Trading Standards are warning residents about a recent scam where fraudsters cold called a resident claiming they were from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) which was untrue.

The scammer told the resident that their prize winnings were at a London airport depot and to release the winnings, the resident needed to pay them £4300 to cover capital gains tax.

When the resident said they didn’t have that kind of money, the scammer said they could instead pay £1150.

The scammers went on to say that an insurance company were ready to cover delivery of the winnings and claimed they had already cleared this with the residents’ bank who were waiting for the winnings to be cashed.

REMEMBER – to protect yourself from scams, do NOT pass personal or banking information to people who cold-call you.

HMRC will never request money from you in this manner.
