Oxleas Music Therapy

Music therapy is based on the understanding that all human beings are able to respond to music, irrespective of musical ability. It involves the use of sound, rhythm and improvised music in order to form a musical relationship between the child or young person and the therapist.

Music therapy sessions can offer people a different experience of shared play, interaction, learning and understanding, through verbal and non-verbal modes of communication. In practical terms, this may involve music making with instruments, song, music technology, sound, talking, listening, and opportunities for client led play.

In this therapeutic relationship, the child or young person can respond and discover a sense of self. In this respect, we explore the client's individual potential and identity within a therapeutic process that's designed especially for them in a safe and creative environment.

Oxleas Patient Experience survey

The Oxleas Patient Experience survey gives you the opportunity to feedback on the care and treatment you have received. We also encourage your friends, family and carers to also provide feedback. Hearing your views gives us a better understanding of the needs of our patients, families and carers which helps us to make sure that we are providing a good standard of care.

The short survey only takes a few minutes to complete and you can provide a written comment explaining what you think is working well and what is not. The Patient Experience team will collect the results of the surveys and these are shared with the relevant departments and management teams. This helps us to shape our services to continually improve the quality of the care and treatment we provide.

Description

Universal Services:

There is no universal support within the core offer of this team. Music Therapy is only available to children and young people with a diagnosis of ASD and who have an emotional or social need which is significantly affecting their general development and ability to make positive relationships with others.
Universal services are however commissioned through the Oxleas Music Therapy Community Partnership where children’s centers and nurseries buy-in the service.

Targeted Services:

The core Music Therapy service does not provide targeted support in this area as outcomes for the CCG component of the service are purely health related. However, the Music Therapy team is keen to ascertain the impact of health outcomes on the child/young person’s learning. Targeted support for this area is provided through the Oxleas Music Therapy Community Partnership where the child/young person attends a commissioning school or early years setting.

Physical and emotional well-being:

Interactive Music-Making and music therapy groups are available to children under the age of five years who have a diagnosis of ASD and who require additional support to develop to their personal best. This approach is based on working closely with the parents/caregivers and puts your child at the centre of the music-making. The Interactive Music-Making Specialist will develop your child’s music making to focus on a range of outcomes to do with their physical, social, emotional and language development as needed.

Access and inclusion resources:

Access to the Music Therapy service is through your Community Paediatrician only. When we work with your child we are committed to thinking about outcomes which will be of benefit your child’s inclusion in everyday life;  at home, school and in leisure.
